Functional Analyst (Freelance possible)

📋 Tasks and responsibilities

Within a large-scale business transformation programme, we are looking for a functional analyst to strengthen the existing teams.

You will join a department of around 90 people and contribute to the handover, refactoring and greenfield delivery of new business applications in an Agile environment.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

• Building effective and lasting relationships with business stakeholders, project stakeholders, team leads and external partners.
• Identifying, analysing, documenting and validating existing business processes as well as new functional and non-functional user needs.
• Translating requirements into concrete business solutions through functional analyses and application designs.
• Preparing clear software requirements specifications, including the necessary diagrams, models and analysis artefacts.
• Working closely with technical team members to validate the functional design and support the translation into technical specifications.
• Following up end-to-end on the delivery of new functionalities and applications.
• Producing and maintaining the required project documentation throughout the different phases.
• Collaborating with business analysts, developers and project coordinators to refine and validate the proposed solutions.
• Reporting progress, supporting decision-making, identifying risks and escalating where needed together with project managers.
• Writing user stories and contributing to customer journey analysis to ensure business needs are translated into valuable solutions.
• Contributing to test analysis and test design, including the preparation of test plans and test cases.
• Using modelling and documentation tools such as UML, BPMN and Confluence where relevant.

Languages

• French or Dutch: active knowledge, both spoken and written, including technical documentation.
• English: active written knowledge for documentation purposes.
• Knowledge of the second national language is an asset.

📝 Your profile

You have experience as a confirmed functional analyst and are comfortable handling all project phases in an Agile/Scrum context.

• Very strong functional and business analysis skills, with the ability to understand complex domains quickly.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, when interacting with business and development teams.
• Solution-oriented and customer-focused mindset.
• Strong capacity to abstract and structure complex information.
• Flexibility to work across changing business contexts.
• Ability to integrate smoothly into an existing team and support junior colleagues.
• Good command of functional analysis techniques and modelling approaches, including UML and BPMN.
• Experience with user story writing, customer journey mapping and test analysis & design.
• Working knowledge of Confluence and basic SQL.
• Good understanding of technical concepts and terminology required for functional analysis, such as APIs, mappings, business models, batches and services.

The application landscape is broad and relies on established technologies such as J2EE, Java 8, Oracle, Hibernate, JUnit, Selenium, Maven, Git and Jira. Although the role does not include hands-on technical development tasks, being able to understand and discuss this technical environment is important.

Due to the nature of the activities, Belgian nationality is required.

Location

The role is based in Brussels, near Brussels-South station, with the possibility to work from home up to 3 days per week.
