Freelance Senior Digital Workplace Architect - Microsoft 365 & Azure

For a regulated financial institution in Brussels, this role focuses on shaping and governing a secure, scalable and user-centric digital workplace ecosystem. The Digital Workplace Architect acts as the link between business needs and technology decisions, ensuring that workplace solutions support productivity, compliance and the long-term digital strategy.

Role "Digital Workplace Architect"

In this position, you will contribute to both regulatory and organisational compliance, including design documentation, architectural governance and security requirements. You will also help define and enable the future digital workplace strategy.

The scope includes the design and adoption of key capabilities such as Cloud PC, Modern Workplace, Microsoft Copilot and App Control for Business, with a strong focus on security, scalability and end-user experience.

Architecture & Solution Design

• Define infrastructure and application designs in line with security and architecture requirements.
• Create architecture diagrams and technical documentation for Digital Workplace services such as endpoints (Windows and iOS), messaging infrastructure (Exchange, mail routing), Azure services (Hybrid / Azure AD join, AVD, Windows 365, Conditional Access and related cloud infrastructure), Teams and SharePoint.
• Evaluate and initiate roadmap items aligned with Modern Workplace capabilities and a cloud-first IT strategy.
• Ensure alignment with internal security policies, regulatory requirements and compliance standards.
• Collaborate closely with engineering, operations and external technology partners to support successful implementation.
• Produce and maintain architectural documentation, including high-level designs, reference architectures, standards and detailed architecture documents.
• Drive continuous improvement and innovation across the digital workplace roadmap.

Knowledge and expertise

• Strong experience with IT infrastructure projects in a Digital Workplace environment.
• A clear affinity with security while maintaining a strong focus on end-user experience.

Technical competences/skills

• Extensive knowledge of Microsoft 365 products, including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Teams and Copilot.
• Strong knowledge of Azure and identity services, including Azure AD / Microsoft Entra ID, Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Conditional Access and Intune.
• Ability to write clear technical documentation such as Detailed Architecture Documents.
• Good understanding of security evolutions including endpoint security, Zero Trust policies and passwordless approaches.
• Solid networking fundamentals such as zoning, VLAN, NAC, VPN and endpoint connectivity.
• Ability to advise and support technical teams during implementation activities.
• Experience with automation and scripting, including PowerShell, Infrastructure as Code concepts and Digital Experience Monitoring (DEX).

Proven experience requirements

• Proven track record in IT infrastructure projects within Digital Workplace environments.
• Experience working with business stakeholders, architects, security teams and subject-matter experts to deliver secure, stable and performant solutions.
• Experience in IT within a high-security environment, for example in the financial sector.

Soft competences/skills

• Team-oriented and collaborative communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical topics into clear and actionable insights.
• Experience facilitating workshops and architectural discussions, writing concise documentation and sharing knowledge effectively.
• Leadership skills to align and guide cross-functional teams and processes.
