Freelance Senior LCA Expert - Product Sustainability

Omschrijving

📋 Tasks and responsibilities

This role sits within the Sustainability and ESG function, which supports the delivery of transparent, robust and credible product sustainability information across the portfolio. The team works on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Product Carbon Footprints (PCF), methodological governance, customer sustainability support and the rollout of portfolio-level product footprint assessments in close collaboration with business stakeholders.

To ensure continuity during a temporary absence, an experienced LCA specialist is needed to support ongoing delivery from day one. You will take ownership of LCA and PCF execution, handle customer sustainability requests, maintain product footprint models and actively engage business units in a product portfolio assessment initiative. The position requires strong technical autonomy, a hands-on mindset and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.

LCA & Product Footprint Delivery

  • Run, update and interpret Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs), including cradle-to-gate and cradle-to-grave assessments.
  • Maintain, update and further improve product footprint and LCA models.
  • Review, validate and challenge data inputs from production sites to ensure data quality and methodological consistency.
  • Prepare technical documentation, calculation reports and presentations for internal and external audiences.

Customer & Sustainability Support

  • Support customer requests related to sustainability and product footprints in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Contribute to product sustainability assessments across the portfolio.
  • Provide methodological guidance on LCA, PCF and related sustainability frameworks.
  • Coordinate with external reviewers or critical review panels when needed.

Business Unit Engagement & Rollout

  • Lead outreach towards business units to onboard them into a product portfolio assessment project.
  • Explain the methodology, align on data requirements and help ensure consistent implementation across the different business areas.
  • Act as a technical point of contact between Sustainability, business units and other internal stakeholders.

Technical profile requirements

Essential

  • Strong working knowledge of ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.
  • Proven hands-on experience delivering LCAs, including cradle-to-gate and cradle-to-grave assessments.
  • Solid experience with Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) calculations.
  • Advanced user knowledge of LCA for Experts (formerly GaBi).
  • Experience working with LCI databases and performing data quality reviews.

Preferred

  • Industry experience in metals, chemicals, batteries, manufacturing and/or recycling.
  • Experience supporting or participating in LCA critical reviews.
  • Knowledge of PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) methodology.
  • Familiarity with battery value chains and critical raw materials.
  • Understanding of EU sustainability regulations affecting product claims, such as the EU Battery Regulation and related delegated acts.
  • Broader understanding of product sustainability methodologies.

Non-technical profile requirements

  • 5–7 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Proven ability to deliver LCAs and PCFs independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to engage and influence business units.
  • Able to manage multiple requests in parallel within a delivery-driven environment.
  • Profiles with consulting experience can be a strong match given the need for speed, autonomy and adaptability.

Methodology/Certification requirements

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline, such as:
    • Environmental Engineering
    • Environmental Sciences
    • Chemical Engineering
    • Materials Science / Metallurgical Engineering
